Event Description:
Moving the Mood is a free, one-hour dance session created for those living with chronic stress, anxiety, or looking for a sober-friendly space to move and reset. It’s based on ecstatic dance—a simple, open-format movement practice with no choreography, no pressure, and no expectation to perform.
The session begins with a 5–10 minute welcome and grounding exercise to help participants settle in. Then we move into 45 minutes of uninterrupted music and freeform movement—no talking, no mirrors, just space to move however feels right. Whether that means stretching in place, swaying, or dancing with full energy, all expressions are welcome.
After the music ends, we invite you to stay for 10–15 minutes of optional conversation and connection. Talking is welcomed at that point for those who want to share space or decompress in community.
This kind of movement supports nervous system regulation, tension release, and deeper body awareness. It’s especially helpful for those who feel overwhelmed or disconnected and want a safe, supportive way to come back into their body.
Wear comfortable clothes. Bring water. Come as you are.
All bodies and experience levels welcome.
Despite the name, you don’t need to feel “ecstatic” to join. You don’t even need to consider yourself a dancer.
There’s no talking, no instruction, and no need to perform. We play music for about an hour, and you move however feels right for you. That might mean swaying gently, stretching in place, walking the room—or just standing still. It’s not a class or a show. It’s a space to get out of your head and into your body.
For people with anxiety, this can be surprisingly grounding. You’re not being watched. There’s no pressure to “do it right.” The lights are soft, the space is supportive, and everyone is there for the same reason—to feel a little more at home in their own skin.
You don’t need experience. You just need curiosity and comfortable clothes.
Dance is more than just movement—it’s a way to regulate the nervous system and support mental health. Research shows that unstructured, expressive movement can reduce symptoms of anxiety by shifting the body out of a stress response and into a calmer, more regulated state.
When we feel anxious, our body often moves into a state of fight, flight, or freeze. This can lead to muscle tension, shallow breathing, and a sense of disconnection from the body. Moving in a low-pressure, judgment-free space helps interrupt that cycle. By increasing physical awareness, encouraging deep breathing, and releasing held tension, dance gives the body a way to reset.
Studies have found that dancing can lower cortisol (a stress hormone), raise serotonin and dopamine (which support mood), and increase heart rate variability—a key indicator of nervous system resilience. Dance also activates multiple brain regions at once, including areas involved in emotion regulation and sensory integration. This makes it a uniquely powerful form of embodied therapy, even without talking.
Crucially, you don’t need choreography or skill to get these benefits. In fact, non-performative dance—like what we do at FTD—is often more effective for people with anxiety because it removes the pressure to “do it right.” The goal isn’t performance. It’s presence.
Whether you move a little or a lot, what matters is that you’re engaging with your body in a safe, intentional way. Over time, this kind of practice can help reduce reactivity, increase body awareness, and build a stronger sense of internal calm.
